This first newsletter is just a test. This is a mic check, done to an empty room, before the doors even open. With Twitter threatening to collapse or turn into some kind of alt-right haunted dumpster fire (or perhaps just as likely—remain more or less the same) it seems as good a time as any to kick off this newsletter, which I’ve been meaning to get rolling for a long time.
I’ll be upfront and admit I don’t know where I’m going with this. I like the idea of having a place for somewhat regular (weekly? monthly?) dispatches weaving together my different interests and obsessions.
Who is this guy writing this newsletter? I’m a writer, the author of DIY Magic. I also host Find The Others, a weekly radio show over on 107.1 XRAY FM, basically a talk show that I use as an excuse to get to talk to all sorts of fascinating people.
What should you expect from said newsletter? I tend to be drawn towards explorations of consciousness, the liminal, awareness, and the esoteric. I like exploring stuff that gets a bit out there, and doing so with one foot firmly planted on the ground, and the other foot slipping off into the nebulous and phantasmagorical. I think that maybe the key, over looked, big obvious secret to life, the universe, and everything, is the fact that there is no there there—unless we include ourselves, our consciousness, our Atman, the observer, in the equation. For this reason, I like writing about consciousness, and the ways we can play with, affect, and attenuate our awareness. This often leads to exploring subjects such as meditation, psychedelics, trance states, and the magical. Often, it is on the edge of things that interesting things take place and can be seen with clarity.
Beyond a fascination with the weird and the magical my writing also often has (for lack of a better descriptor) a self-help vibe. This is not because I consider myself some kind of expert, but because I am mainly writing and exploring ideas that are helpful to myself, and writing is the best way to think clearly. It’s my hope that if I clearly and carefully transcribe my best thoughts, they might also be useful to you as well.
In the next several installments I plan to explore topics like Seasonal Affective Disorder, Meditation, video Game addiction, microdosing psilocybin, the benefits of leaning analog in a digital world, qi gong, dance, Artificial Intelligence, EMDR therapy, sound healing, and how and why to launch a radio show. Stay tuned!
Hey Anthony,
I really liked your DIY Magic book.
Best wishes for 2023!
